“Instagram connection could not be completed” error — why it happens and how to fix it

This error is almost always caused by your Instagram account or a Meta app settingnot meeting a requirement — it's not a problem on Talkano's side. Check the 3 steps below in order; most cases are resolved at the first step.

Your Instagram account must be “Professional” (Business/Creator)

Instagram's messaging API only works with Professional accounts. If the account is personal, the connection won't complete.
On your phone, open Instagram → Settings and privacy → Account type and tools → Switch to professional account → Business.

Grant ALL permissions on the consent screen

On the Instagram consent screen that opens when you tap "Connect", the permissions for messages, basic profile info, and comments must all be enabled. If any is left unchecked, the connection fails. Grant the permissions, then try again.

Be signed in with the correct account (most common cause)

The connection uses the Instagram account you're currently signed in with in your browser. If more than one account is open, the wrong one (often the personal account) gets connected and the connection is rejected — this is the most common case.The most reliable way: Open a new Private / Incognito window → sign in there with ONLY your business account → open this page in that window and connect. (Alternative: sign out of your other Instagram accounts so only the business account stays logged in.)

Error codes (for technical support)

You'll see a code on the error screen. Share this code when you ask for help:

ig_account_unsupportedMeta rejected the account/app for the Instagram API (IGApiException, code 100). Usually the account is not Professional, or the Meta app is not fully authorized for the Instagram API. Check steps 1–2.
token_exchange_failedThe connection could not be completed — usually the account is not Professional or a permission was not granted. Steps 1–3.
ig_taken_by_other_tenantThis Instagram account is already connected to another Talkano business. Remove it from there first.
forbiddenYou don't have permission to connect Instagram for this business — you must be the owner or an admin.
cancelledCancelled on the consent screen. Try again and grant the permissions.
