WhatsApp verification code not arriving — why and how to fix it

If the SMS or voice code doesn’t arrive when connecting your WhatsApp Business number, the cause is almost always the number type or the phone system behind it — not Talkano. The steps below explain why it happens and how to fix it.

The golden rule

WhatsApp’s verification call cannot get through an IVR / auto-attendant. If there is an IVR menu, voice assistant, voicemail, greeting message or call forwardingbehind the number, WhatsApp treats the line as “busy/machine” and hangs up without reading the code. The code must be read on a clean line answered directly by a real phone (or softphone).
1

Decide first: which number are you connecting?

A mobile number — easiest, recommended. SMS arrives instantly and verification takes ~2 minutes. If your voice assistant is on a different number, the two simply stay separate — no conflict.
A landline / toll-free / virtual (VoIP) number. These cannot receive SMS; they can only be verified by voice call on a clean line. Note: VoIP/virtual numbers are officially unsupported by Meta — even if it works, the number may be restricted later.
2

If SMS doesn’t arrive → choose “Phone call” (voice)

Toll-free and landline numbers can’t receive SMS. On the verification screen, wait for the SMS a moment, then choose “Resend code / Call me / Phone call” to get a voice call. WhatsApp calls your number and reads the 6-digit code aloud — you listen and type it in.
3

Clear the line (the most important step)

For the voice call to work, no automation can be attached to the number during the call:
  • Turn off call forwarding.WhatsApp rejects a forwarded call (it says “we are sorry” and hangs up).
  • Disable the IVR menu, voicemail and greeting message.
  • Temporarily disable the voice assistant — otherwise the assistant answers the call and the code can’t be read.
One goal: when WhatsApp calls, the phone should ring directly and a real person should answer and hear the code.
4

If your number is virtual/SIP → answer it on a softphone

For a virtual/SIP number (like a toll-free line), “ring it directly” means sending the call to a softphone:
  1. Install a free softphone on your computer/phone (e.g. Zoiper or Linphone).
  2. Sign in with your carrier’s SIP credentials(username, password, server, port — under “SIP details” in your carrier’s panel).
  3. Temporarily route the number’s incoming calls to the softphone (turn off any PBX/trunk routing).
  4. In WhatsApp choose “Phone call” → the call rings on the softphone → answer, hear the code, enter it. Restore your settings afterwards.
5

Don’t retry over and over — you’ll hit a temporary block

WhatsApp limits verification attempts for security. Repeated failed attempts trigger a temporary block (Cloud API: 10 requests per 72 hours; otherwise a ~3–12 hour wait). If the code doesn’t arrive, don’t keep retrying — fix the line first, and once the block clears make one clean attempt.

Extra checks

  • Make sure call/SMS blockers, DND (Do Not Disturb) and spam filters are off — they can silently swallow both the SMS and the voice call.
  • The number must be able to receive international calls — the WhatsApp verification call comes from an international number.
  • If the number is active on another WhatsApp account (personal or the WhatsApp Business app), remove it there first — a number can be on only one WhatsApp product at a time. Moving it to the Cloud API stops the phone app from working on that number.

Fix by symptom

SMS never arrivesThe number is toll-free/landline/virtual and can’t receive SMS — use the “Phone call” (voice) option.
Call says “we are sorry” and hangs upThe call is being forwarded — WhatsApp rejects forwarded calls. Turn off call forwarding and ring the phone directly.
Call connects but the code is cut offThere’s an IVR/voice assistant/greeting or background sound on the line. Turn these off and ring a real phone/softphone directly.
“Too many attempts / can’t request code”Temporary block (Cloud API: 10 per 72h; otherwise ~3–12 hours). Wait, fix the line, then make one clean attempt.
“This number is already registered”The number is active on another WhatsApp account (including the phone app). Remove it there first, then retry.

Number verified — now connect it in Talkano

Once your number shows “Connected” on the WhatsApp Cloud API: Panel → Settings → WhatsApp connection“Connect with Facebook” → pick your number. Your assistant then replies to incoming WhatsApp messages using the same knowledge base and inbox as Instagram and your website chat.

Still not working?

If you’ve done the steps and the number still won’t verify, tell us which number (mobile, or toll-free/landline) you’re trying to connect and what you see — info@roomanos.com. We’ll connect it together.
